After my first day of work here in Ubud, Bali Indonesia I’m proud to announce that the Gerbz website is built! Sure, we’re a long way from reaching our goals, but building momentum is important if we want to achieve our mission:
to transparently build and validate a process for transforming ideas into successful businesses. The secret to building momentum is having a solid foundation. Pushing a boulder on grass is a lot harder than on concrete. Programmers utilize frameworks and write functions that can be used time and time again. Dialing in your WordPress blog and having the right plugins makes writing blog posts a breeze. Once you have a solid foundation focus on doing the right type of work. The Pareto Principle states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Do your best to focus on the 20% of the work that needs to get done. That 20% is the amount of energy it takes to get the ball rolling. In the lean startup world 20% is the MVP. At my last company we had a sign on the wall, “Make it work, then make it slick”. It forced us to focus on the 20% of the work that mattered. So how strong is your foundation and what can you do to strengthen it? What’s the 20% you need to just “Make it work”?
